Day
1 - Driving south and crossing the border into Tanzania at Namanga and
continue on to Arusha. This is a pleasant town situated at the base of Mount
Meru and is the starting point for your excursion to the Serengeti National
Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. This excursion is conducted in locally
operated Land Rovers, which are specially adapted for safari use.
Day 2 – 4 - Leaving from your base near Arusha you make
your way towards the ultimate game driving experience. The roads, which take
you there are in the extreme, so be prepared for some rough travelling. Camp
is made just short of the crater. From the crater, you head into the awesome
Serengeti National
Park and spend the next 24 hours viewing game on one of the worlds best
backdrops - the Serengeti flood plains, host to the 'migration' for usually 8
- 9 months of the year, living in harmony with the local Masai. Leaving the
game park behind us we head back to the base camp at Arusha.
Day
5 – 6 -Before heading further south, you have the opportunity to visit the
town of Arusha and wander in its colourful markets and bargain for those
magnificent wooden carvings that are in abundance there.
We head towards the warm Indian Ocean, through the town of Moshi, which is the
base for the Mount Kilimanjaro climbing expeditions. Passing the Usambara
Mountains, you encounter vast sisal plantations, the largest export from
Tanzania, on your way to tropical Dar es Salaam, which locally means 'place of
clean water'. Here you pitch your tent on a white sand beach and enjoy the
warm Indian Ocean.
Day
7 – 10 - Waking to the sound of local fishermen pulling in their early catch,
you head off to Dar es Salaam. A ferry from Dar es Salaam takes you to the
"Spice Island" - Zanzibar. This legendary island is deeply steeped in history
as one of the major starting points for most East African explorers. Today,
the quiet streets of the Old Town still retain their Arabic influence - from
the Medina-like shops to the palaces of the Sultans of Zanzibar who founded
their vast empires on the spoils of the slave and ivory trades.
Leaving Zanzibar, you take the ferry back to the mainland and Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania's first city with its colonial buildings and palm-lined port, where
your safari ends.
